Blog Submission Guidelines

You don’t have to consider yourself a creative to be a storyteller.

The Lapis Lounge is a small blog run by me, Magz. While most of the current posts are from me, I love a nice, fresh take on fantastical mundane stories and the writing craft.

What is “fantastical mundane”?

Glad you asked!

These are the stories where there are implications and subtext that the mundane world isn’t as it seems on the tin. Take that as you will, whether through short fiction or poems.

But Magz, what if I want to do a writing craft post instead?

Yes, yes, yes!

If you have written and submitted a work to a literary magazine, I count that as experience in talking about your takes on the writing craft. As long as you take a storytelling approach and not dump too much jargon into your post, it’s fair game to me.

Topics can include, but are not limited to:

  • Ideation (Mind-mapping, brainstorming, idea dumps, etc)
  • Word Choice
  • Drafting and Revision
  • Story Arcs
  • Characterization
  • Sentence variation

General Guidelines

1. Short fiction and essays should be under 3000 words.

Only one short fiction per submission. Document types accepted are .doc, .rtf, .docx, and .odt. PDFs will not be considered.

2. Poems should not exceed 20 lines.

You may include up to 3 poems in a single poetry submission. Please include all three poems in the same attached document. Document types accepted are .doc, .rtf, .docx, and .odt. PDFs will not be considered.

3. Please send previously unpublished work only.

A piece is considered published if it has been posted or made publicly available on a blog, website, or social media platform.

4. Simultaneous submissions are okay, but please let us know if your submission is accepted elsewhere.

5. Submissions should be readable and error-free.

Content must be written in readable and error-free English. I will be publishing your submissions as-is. If I have to edit it, I will not consider it for publishing on the blog.

6. Please include a brief third-person bio with your submission email with the following:

  • Name (pen name or real name)
  • 5-sentence bio about yourself (yes, we want to keep it brief)
  • Brief synopsis of your work

All writers are welcome to submit, especially writers of color, LGBTQ writers, writers with disabilities, and all writers from marginalized backgrounds.

I do not tolerate plagiarism. I will check and if I found that you plagiarized, all future submissions from you will not be considered for publishing onto my blog.

There is a two-week turnaround time for reviewing and giving decisions on your submissions. I’m a one-being operation here, so please be patient. I aim for one guest post per month, with a first-come, first-published basis.

Unfortunately, I’m not able to pay guest contributors at this time but your work will be promoted on all the social media channels for The Lapis Lounge and its associated podcast.
